Before your customers break out the paintbrushes and paint, they should take steps to properly prep the space, including using painter’s tape to protect edges and create clean lines. Painter’s tape is not one-size-fits all, however; several specialty types exist for particular projects.

Use the following information to educate your customers on which tapes to use for different projects to boost add-on sales and position yourself as a project expert.

Masking Tape vs. Painter's Tape Comparison Chart

Specialty Tapes

Multi/Textured Surface
This variety of painter’s tape sticks well to eggshell and high-gloss painted surfaces, as well as masonry, fabric, sealed concrete and other textured surfaces. It can be left on for long periods without damage.

Shaped Tape
If customers want to create designs on their walls, furniture and other surfaces, shaped tape comes in pre-cut patterns, such as chevron, scallop and wave. They adhere to the wall like regular painter’s tape.

Delicate Surface
When painting delicate surfaces, such as wallpaper, ceiling tiles or freshly painted areas, a delicate surface tape provides a clean line and can be left on for longer periods without damaging the surface.

Various Widths
Painter’s tape comes in different widths, with the 1-inch and 2-inch varieties as the most common. Painter’s tape also has varying thicknesses, with ultra thin varieties better suited for extra fine lines.
