Renee on the Road: Cardwell Do it Best Home Center

In July, Renee on the Road visited Ohio, but before the team headed east, Renee Changnon, retail engagement specialist, and Katie McHone-Jones, director of member services and events, made a stop at Cardwell Do it Best Home Center in Indianapolis, right in NHPA’s backyard. Owner Jeff Cardwell and store manager Alan Mcneal showed the group around the store, which has been serving the community since 1945.

4 Ways Cardwell Do it Best Home Center Does Business Right

1. Welcoming entrance. The store entrance has signage that welcomes customers and makes them want to spend time in the store. The entryway also doesn’t waste any space.

2. Thoughtful endcaps. The well-organized and clean store takes advantage of endcaps, with thought-out displays that share sales, seasonal products and other must-shop items.

3. Community involvement. Jeff is also a real estate agent and has been active politically since the 1980s. His conference room is full of memorabilia from the hardware industry and his years in politics, two of his passions.

4. Heart for others. Jeff started a nonprofit organization, People Helping People Network, which is focused on serving people in the United States, El Salvador and other countries around the world by helping with housing, hunger relief, healthcare and education.
